Facebook Users' Opportunity to Claim Their Portion of $725M Privacy Settlement

Facebook users have been given until August to stake their claim in a $725 million class-action settlement resulting from a lawsuit that accused the social media giant of privacy violations. A newly launched website provides details about the settlement and allows eligible users to submit their claims.

The lawsuit was initiated in 2018 after Facebook revealed that the personal information of 87 million users had been inappropriately shared with Cambridge Analytica. The revelation sparked widespread concerns about privacy breaches and led to legal action against the company.

Individuals who held an active Facebook account in the United States between May 2007 and December 2022 have until August 25 to enter a claim. The exact amount of the settlement payments for each user is yet to be determined, as it depends on the number of claimants and the duration of their Facebook account usage.

In 2021, Facebook rebranded itself as Meta and subsequently settled the class-action lawsuit in the following year. However, it is important to note that Meta did not admit any wrongdoing in relation to the allegations. A spokesperson for the company stated that the decision to settle was made in the best interest of the community and shareholders. No additional comments were provided by the Meta spokesperson.

To participate in the settlement, Facebook users can visit the website

On the website, they are required to provide their name, address, and email address, and confirm that they resided in the United States and were active Facebook users between the specified dates.

This class-action settlement provides an opportunity for affected Facebook users to seek compensation for the privacy violations they experienced during the outlined period. By filing a claim, eligible users can potentially receive a share of the settlement funds, although the exact amount will vary depending on the number of claimants and the length of their Facebook usage.
